Different Kinds of Contact Lenses Designs

There are various types of lens designs available for different vision problems. They are

• Spherical contact lenses – these help to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness.
• Toric contact lenses – it corrects astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia.
• Bifocal contact lenses – these contain various zones for far and near vision to correct presbyopia.
• Orthokeratology contact lenses – these are designed to bring back the shape of cornea while sleeping.

Various Features of Contact Lenses

These lenses are available in different features like

• Colored lenses – available in various colors such as green, grey, blue, tortoise and brown.
• Prosthetic contact lenses – these lenses are for people who have disfigured eye due to any disease or an accident. This looks similar to their normal eye.

• Special effect lenses – it is also known as theatrical, costume or novelty lenses. This gives your eyes a look of a zombie or a cat.
• Custom lenses – when the regular lenses give you no help, opt for this design of lens.
• Hybrid lenses – has got the GP center with soft outer part. Provides comfort and crispy optics of a soft and large lens.
• UV – Inhibiting Lenses – provides an ultraviolet blocker which is not visible by simply looking at the contact lens.

Types of Lenses

There are three kinds of lenses

1. Soft lens – it is made from water containing and gel like plastics. This is most commonly used. They are little larger than the iris.
2. Hard lenses – these are made from Lucite or Plexiglas, also known as PMMA. These are rarely used.
3. GP lenses – they are also called as “oxygen permeable” or RGP lenses. They are rigid and waterless plastics and they are smaller than the iris. It is good for high astigmatism and presbyopia.
